Your First session
Whether you have gone to counseling before, or are making the decision to speak to someone for the very first time, the first session can be a little anxiety producing. You're talking to a complete stranger about something close to your heart. Here's what you can expect from your first session with Christina...
After the initial paperwork has been completed, the session will begin. The first session is typically a "getting to know you" time. You can say as much or as little about what's bringing you in, however keep in mind that the more you say, the easier it will be for your counselor to assist you. She'll want to know how you perceive the problem and your role in it and approximately how long it's been going on. You may also be asked, "Why now?" As in, what spurred you to make the decision to seek help at this point in time? Was there a specific incident or event that prompted you to seek counseling, or perhaps you just got tired of living with the issue.
Christina will also ask you to talk about yourself; your interests, hobbies, educational background, a bit about your family, your job, etc. Knowing a bit about these things helps her to have an understanding of you as a person, and work to find the tools of change that can best help you to feel better.
Lastly, you'll be asked to define goals. What are you hoping to gain from counseling? Can you imagine what would be different in your life after having gone to counseling? We'll talk about your needs and options as far as how to start off to reach your goals.
